The African continent with it’s rich history, beautiful landscapes, and diverse cultures called upon some of the runway’s top designers for the Spring ‘08 shows. Geometric ethnic prints splashed across skirts, dresses, caftans, and blouses at Marni, Diane Von Furstenburg, and Duro Olowu among others. Lush Greens, Reds, Blues, and Yellows popped beneath Tuareg-inspired metal amulets and waist plates and chunky beaded necklaces. Colors and detailing weren’t the only references either. Traditional proportions like vuluminous sleeves, wide tiered layers, and sweeping lengths inspire thoughts of a Nigerian wedding. Like Micheal Jackson and Lionel Richie said, “We are the World” and since I love color and, hey, I love Africa, I am more than happy to excersize this trend and pay homage to the motherland.
