I went the debut of LOOP on Saturday night at Gen Art in Silverlake. It was a reasonably fun party with good music, eye-popping art and free Peroni. The event was a sneak peek at some of the artists to be showcased at the upcoming POOLtradeshow, an indie venture for established boutique brands and emerging designers that’s held twice a year in conjunction with MAGIC in Las Vegas.
There were lots of interesting t-shirts, dresses and bags on display by Quiet Hero (the pink shirt below is available on their website), Purlieu (the frock on top) and Denada (the yellow shirt) among others (sorry I can’t name all of the artists, but like I said, they were giving away Peronis):

And the paintings were as pretty amazing too, with an emphasis on Peter Max-esque psychedelia and even Peggy Moffit:

Here’s a close-up:

And is this bandit wall by Kelly Towles (check out her website) an Allen Ginsberg reference?

Sure looks like it to me.

Katie Holmes Disguises Herself as Anna Wintour. Again.

Is it just me, or is Katie Holmes taking this Anna Wintour thing too far? Is this some sort or Scientologist plot to steal the Vogue editor’s identity? Well, I guess if I wanted to kill someone, and steal his/her spirit, I’d wear this getup, too. Including the wig.
Oh my gosh, I think we have another Ugly Betty synopsis on our hands. Those striking writers better watch out!
Another thing that’s super creepy about this impersonation is that we’re pretty sure Tom picks out Katie’s clothes. Does he have a thing for Wintour?
WEIRD!

Project Runway:Santino Rice Sighting
So, the other day I was sitting in a parking lot in South Pasadena, when who should I see skulking around? Santino! I can’t be sure, but I think he was coming out a Osh, that home improvement store. He had a Starbucks in hand and a woman, who I believe was his mother, at his side. They got into an SUV.
The sighting sparked my interest enough to look up his blog, but after reading it for five seconds I wanted to barf (much like I did when I saw this picture). So, I stopped.

Topshop’s “Boho Tech”: Low on excitement, high on wearability

Topshop.com unveiled their Spring 08′ “Boho Tech” collection last week. It’s an easy (maybe too easy) mix of ethnic-inspired pieces with tailored supplements. I’ll admit, while I would wear these pieces together on a daily basis, I’m not sure if their combination is dynamic enough to market as a “collection” but, hey, it’s Topshop and with their prices I’m not complaining.
Both Vogue and Elle have highlighted the importance of Ikat prints for spring and Boho Tech is choc full of it and I’m pretty excited about the 2 jodphur options they’re offering since I’ve been waiting for these to make it to the mass market for cheap. They top off the collection with fitted military jackets, oxford heels and gladiator sandals.
Do you see my point now? It’s like everything the hipster girl already has in her closet, just jumbled into one “collection”. Underwhelming but comfortably acceptable, kinda like a Rum and Coke. Here are my Boho Tech styling picks:

The Battle of the Kate Calvin Klein Ads:Kate Moss vs. Kate Bosworth

Well, I’m no Kate Moss fanatic, and Kate Bosworth’s jeans are way better, but I say Moss wins this one. What Bosworth, you’re too good to take off your shirt?!?!
Which Kate does it for you?

Paris vs. H&M: The Saga Continues
As much as people in the US go insane every time an H&M opens, not everyone is so welcoming. Case in point:Paris’ Mayor, who, last week, decided to fight the French Commission’s decision to let H&M worm its way onto Avenue Des Champs-ElysĂ©e.
This has been an ongoing fight, with the Mayor’s office claiming H&M would cheapen the street. The argument is that there are enough corporate logos, and they need to leave room for cafes and theaters to keep things civil. This is controversial reasoning though, since there are already equally gauche stores like Gap, Zara and the (barf) Disney Store hicking things up on the famous avenue.
I like a good H&M as much as the next cheapskate, but this resistance makes sense to me. America would do well to be as unslutty as the Parisians–we’ll put any store anywhere no matter who or what.
However, if I were them, I’d kick the Gap out and give the space to H&M.
