Good old American chain Old Navy is trying to shake their image as a cheap mass market producer of cotton goods discount retailer with new logo and Spring 2008 marketing geared towards women in their 20’s as reported by Advertising Age. This is in response to a loss of market share to competitors like Target. I guess they want you to think less K-Mart and more…. Macys? But I say if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck….
But when I saw this somewhat cute photo from their “Urban Explorer” collection I thought maybe I should stop being so judgemental and at least take a look at the website. I mean Lord knows how long its been since I’ve done that. So I took a look and as I expected, lots of cotton, khaki, and collared tops with pockets… yawn.
I guess I could possibly run the following pieces if I visited a friend out of town and ran out of clothes. Then they’d get me at the register, as they always do, with the $2.50 flip flops in, like, 3 colors because I always need more of those right?

*Graphic tank- $19.50
*Elephant print tank- $14.50
* Clutch- $19.50

“I wish I was dead. Well, maybe not completely dead, maybe just 16 and some place else.”
When I was a kid, I used to love My American Cousin, a Canadian movie set in the “golden summer of 1959.” It’s about a super precocious 12 year old girl named Sandy Wilson, who hates her life on an apple orchard in a small town. Then her American cousin, Butch, a James Dean wannabe from California, drives up in his red Cadillac, and she comes of age. It’s beyond charming.

The costuming in this movie is so insanely good. Sandy walks around in high-waisted red shorts, peddle pushers, sleeveless button downs, crisp white oxford shirts and Keds. She even wears a plaid one piece bathing suit! There are also lots of wayfarers, scarves, and party dresses worn to the Teen Town Dominion Day Dance.
I watched it last night, and now I want to dress like a 1950s Canadian pre-pubescent:

Urban Outfitters jean shorts and swimsuit
Keds canvas Champions
Anchor Scarf by Topshop.
See the trailer of My American Cousin here and the first few minutes of the movie here.

Here are Ronnie, Bobby, Micky and Mike, plus Ralph singing Candy Girl. I think I want everyone to start dressing like New Edition.
And here are our favorite thangs this week:

- The Keffiyeh blurs the line between pop and politics, and Schmashion carries hers like a blankie.
- Trendinista is taking the New Kids on the Block reunion seriously. Outfits are being planned.
- Fashion Binge sees allusions to Grease and Goldie Hawn’s Overboard in Chanel’s Spring 08 show.
- Sweet and Vicious gives us a sneak peek at the Jovovich-Hawks collection for Target.
