Milan Fashion Week FW 2008: Muccia Prada is a genius

I have expressed on more than one occasion how much I revere designer Muccia Prada. She can do no wrong in my eyes and she never ceases to amaze me with her ability to make beautiful wearable art that make us question the very definition of fashion. Within the last 3 seasons alone she’s taken us from an ethereal fairy tale to a 1950’s Italian garden party to now. FW 2008 is a massive lace explosion filled with contradictions.

Couture Swiss lace took over the runway in Black, Nude, Orange, and Lt. Blue. Shapes were simple yet detailed, demure yet sexy, structured yet quirky! Collared blouses, pencil skirts, and shift dresses among other things were paired with futuristic sunglasses and origami folded leather heels that look like they could simply fly away.

This brings me to the reason I am truly in awe. While the clothes are stunning, they were almost over-shadowed by the accessories. Prada really brought it this season. Each shoe, necklace, bracelet, handbag, and even a leather hair net was so well thought out that my eyes could barely keep up with each photo. The chunky platform heels with folded leather “wings” on the heels put all basic Black stilettos to shame!
Prada has reminded me that the rule is “head to toe”, not head to ankles and that my footwear matters just as much, if not more, than the clothes I put on in the morning. Be inspired.

Anna Wintour’s dressing like a hipster
Anna Wintour co-hosted a press conference for the Costume Institute’s exhibition “Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy”. I’ll be honest, I’m not too sure about how cool I think this exhibit will be since I just don’t have any interest in any of that kind of stuff. But I do like what Ms. Wintour is doing here. She’s wearing a graphic Orange dress from Prada Spring 08′ paired with (what appears to be) Black tights and boots. I think she looks very cute, very young, and a lot less stuffy than usual. The bob is still tact but with this look I’m OK with it.

Lindsay Lohan is No Marilyn Monroe
Bert Stern, the photographer who originally took similar photos of Marilyn Monroe, snapped these of Lindsay Lohan. And still, they’re no good. It’s weird because Lohan is suppose to be some big sex maniac, yet the pictures of her doing a rendition of “The Last Sitting” in New York Magazine are strikingly unsexy.
Maybe she’s just in over her head.
Yeah, sorry. She looks old and doesn’t engage the camera in a meaningful way. It’s not for the lack of trying, but she just doesn’t have the life experience or depth of Monroe. And, yeah, I know they’re saying Lohan has been chewed up by fame in a Marilyn sort of way, but I don’t buy it.
These pictures prove a time-honored point: You should never ask a girl to do the work of a woman.

Milan Fashion Week Fall 08:Moschino Cheap & Chic Gives Us Ronnie Spector
I don’t know many women who could pull off a plaid suit like this one from Moschino Cheap & Chic’s Fall 2008 show at Milan Fashion Week. Right now, I can only think of one:
But it always comes back to Ronnie Spector for me.
