Threadtrend is based in L.A. We breath fashion. So for us there should be no better time than L.A. Fashion week, right? Wrong. The truth is that all the immense talent and personal style-setters running around here never make it to Culver City’s Smashbox Studios to display their creations.
There are always exceptions, of course and some of the hand-picked designers do put on an exciting show, one that makes me proud to be an Angeleno. But then there are the rest…. On today’s schedule is the one and only Lauren Conrad collection. Yes, L.C. from The Hills. I’m sure her collection will be full of enough mass produced downtown private label manufactured jersey to clothe a large village.
So far Smashbox Studios has hosted the Fall 2008 shows for Alexis Lamontagna, Imasu by Kelly Nishimoto, Joseph Doming, Julia Clancey, Octavio Carlin, Orthodox, Suh-Tahn, Veronika Jeanvie and Whitley Cross. Of these, Julia Clancey has been the most impressive.

Black, White, and Grape were the staple colors at Julia Clancey. The use of ruffles, cut-out overlays, and exaggerated shoulders gave the collection a futuristic feel; especially when accented by Star Wars-esque glasses and even Princess Laya-esque hair. The show featured dresses of all lengths to suit any event for any girl and the collection is believable.

Another honorable mention, Orthodox, showed Menswear and Womenswear looks. All were equally wearable and infused with L.A. street style influence. Casual 2-piece suits and fall-toned jackets for men. slightly detailed slim trousers, ruffled skirts, and simple dresses for Women. This pretty much sums up the Orthodox collection. I’d wear some of it and I think Manuel Paul might like a couple pieces too.
I know. It’s no New York, Paris, or Milan. But, hey, it’s L.A., the same place where OK and US Weekly are more important than Vogue. What do you expect? I’ve attended countless L.A. Fashion Week shows and each season I pray that maybe next year the true L.A. designers and taste makers will get the recognition they deserve.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America announced their nominees for Womenswear Designer of the Year, and here they are…
Marc Jacobs:

Franciso Costa (Calvin Klein):

Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough (Proenza Schouler):

I vote for the Calvin Klein guy because the 2007 resort season was delightful and a far cry from what I expect from that fashion house.
