Dead celebrities make great advertising tools.  At least that’s what Converse thinks.  The stars, including Hunter S. Thompson, James Dean, Ian Curtis, of their latest ad campaign have all kicked the bucket, but thanks to the magic of Photoshop, they can still wear Chucks. Yay!

All these dead celebs also had untimely or strange deaths, which works for the Converse image according to the company’s CMO Geoff Cottrill:

The ad is a showcase of true originals since the brand’s inception in 1908. It’s a collection of unique individuals who have all chosen us over the years. The ad is about the spirit of the optimistic rebel; people who have all disrupted the status quo.

Huh.  Yeah, I wouldn’t really call Hunter S. Thompson or Sid Vicious,”optimistic,” and I don’t really think that promoting the products of a company owned by Nike is exactly disruptive of “the status quo.”  But, okay, it might sell shoes.

Hmm…let’s compare. My fellow Americans, I ask you, which is sexier? The Girls Next Door on the cover of American Playboy or Lou Doillon on the front of Playboy France.

Why can’t our Playboy be as cool as theirs? After all, we did invent it! Still, our stupid Playboy features lame, “playful” photos of an elderly sex addicts’ ditzy harem, while theirs had pictures like this:

And this:

Yeah, they really are better than us. There is no denying it.
