Karl Lagerfeld has developed such a media character–”the high-fashion curmudgeon”–that he has to remind us once in a while that he is, indeed, a prolific designer, too. The Chanel Couture Spring 2009 collection went a long way to nudge us to recall that fact. The resounding color of the show was white, which seemed like a curt rebellion against the general glumness that’s taken over since we all went broke. Lagerfeld said he “started with a clean sheet of paper.” There were a fair share of feathers and flowers, too, but it wasn’t all lofty free-spiritedness –there was lots of structure by way of a-line skirts and sharp shoulders. Shots of black also made it into the collection, becoming more prominent toward the end.
