Subversive for Target and a first ever show at Cipriani= a good month for Justin Giunta

As you may know, Subversive for Target hits stores on Sunday, March 23rd. This is one of Target’s latest designer collaborations with Subversive jewelry designer Justin Giunta. Considering the collection’s prices, I’d have to say Giunta did a great job mimicking the amazing mixed media pieces he has produced for Subversive.

Here are a few of the Subversive for Target pieces:

Each $49.99 or $59.99

… And a few pieces from Subversive:

Each between $552.00 and$1800

Not bad, huh?!

…. In the mean time, Style.com reports today that Mr. Giunta had his first ever Subversive show at NY’s Cipriani. The latest collection includes beautifully executed bibs full of ethnic inspiration.

Enticing materials, tons of color, and over-sized. This is how we at threadtrend like our accessories. We’ve always been on the Subversive Cheer Squad. Way to “subvert” the jewelry norms Justin Giunta. Looks like there are great times ahead!!

Blason by Pharrell Williams. A Louis Vuitton Jewelry Collection.
pharrell.jpg

Maybe you knew that Pharrell was posing for Louis Vuitton, but did you know he was doing jewelry for every Orange County housewife’s favorite high-priced label? Well, he did, and he showed his Blason collection yesterday in the midst of the Paris couture shows. Williams co-created the line of gold and diamond pieces with Camille Miceli, the fashion house’s official jewelry designer.

Take a look:

I don’t know what to say. I’d really have to see this stuff on to judge it definitively, but I’m surprisingly underwhelmed by this Pharrell Williams line. And I really respect him and his aesthetic sensibilities. I like the ring, in an over-the-top, Growing up Gotti sort of way, but I just don’t see the point of that first corsage looking one.

About the angel, I get it. I get Pharrell’s point, but I fear the comeback of the angel, the most insanely over-exposed religion-goes-mainstream symbol of the 1990s. I’m just going to say no to baby angels. Even in irony.

Wooden Jewelry still lives on
cuff_silhouette_3_1_2_-600x.jpg
These wood and fiberglass cuffs by designer Colgate Searle from Brooklyn’s UM Projects epitomize how quality wooden jewelry should be. They reminded me of how much I love wooden jewelry and, unfortunately, how badly megachains like Target and Walmart ran it in the ground. All hope is not lost. There are still some great indie designers out there creating au natural pieces of wearable art, but you may have to pay more than $4.98 to get it. Just check these out:

Teen Scene: Saleisha’s ‘Seventeen’ cover and Good styling in ‘Teen Vogue’
teen-scene.jpg

OK… Here goes… So, as promised, Saleisha got her Seventeen cover and a 5 page fashion spread published in the February 2008 issue. There are mixed opinions all over the internet (including Threadtrend readers) about how she looks and how the competition was robbed. My personal opinion? Who cares?! I mean have you ever asked yourself “Out of the 1.7 billion girls who auditioned how in the hell did these 13 mediocre city college students make it to TV? It’s not a real competition people!!

Anyway, I digress…. The hair wig still sucks, yes she’s 110% commercial, and who chose the cover outfit? But you know what, she won and, well, we’ll see how her “career” goes…. Phew, glad that’s over!

Secondly, the adorable fashion spread in Teen Vogue’s February 2008 issue serves to teach teens (and grown ass women) how to accessorize and layer using a simple primary color pallette. I mean really, when’s the last time you’ve seen a 15 year old dressed like this? I’ve been having a hard time accessorizing in the morning and I’m 25 years old!

teen-vogue-1.jpg

Lots of colorful beaded necklaces, bracelets, and fabulous shoes from Stella McCartney’s Spring 08′ line adorn the pre-Spring looks like high-waisted shorts, short-sleeve button ups, graphic 3/4 sleeve belted trenches, bright anoraks, and slim cardigans. Again, it’s all about the mixture of simple pieces with detailed graphic/ethnic prints and eye-popping accessories that tie the looks right in. I love it and I can’t wait for Spring!!

Sophisticated Zipper Jewelry? Kate Cusack shows us how.

kate-cusack-11.jpg

I’ve become instantly obsessed with this line of zipper jewelry from jeweler, costume designer, and artist Kate Cusack. Creating necklaces out of zippers could have been executed so horribly but the intricacy and sophistication of these pieces doesn’t make me feel like a wanna-be punk at all.

The Brooklyn designer began making zipper pins in 2003 and ventured into necklaces in 2006. She chose to use simple zippers because, as an artist, she believed she could use any medium to create just about anything. She stresses that no two pieces are alike and each are hand sewn using a variety of zippers.

kate-cusack-2.jpg

The range of design is diverse. One piece in particular reminds me of a strand of tribal beads while others can be worn with evening wear or on fun nights out paired with dresses. No matter what the occasion, I could wear a Kate Cusack piece every day of the year and I hope to use one of her creations in a photoshoot in the near future!

For more information you can contact the artist directly from her website or visit any one of these locations: Julie: Artisans’ Gallery in New York, M.O.C.A museum in Chicago, and the Snyderman-Works Gallery in Philadelphia.

Najwa Moses’ Salte: Forward Thinking Handmade Accessories

nawja.jpg

Not only do I love blogger and indie fashion visionary Najwa Moses‘ handmade accessories, I’m so hot for the way she presents her new collection dubbed “The Hollywood Set.”

I haven’t used the word “fresh” since I was 12, but I don’t know what else to call the collection and the models who showcase them. Case in point:

nawja9.jpgnawja1.jpgnawja8.jpg

The whole line is totally unique, limited edition and made of real leather. Really, they’re so on point and forward thinking–the time has come again for big earrings.

Plus, the designs have names like “The Blogger,” “The Stylist,” and “The Publicist,” which is poignantly awesome since it puts bloggers in the same league as Hollywood heavy hitters. It’s the future, baby. Learn it.

The Christimas list for my Smarter, Artsier side

If you’re like me, you haven’t even started Christmas shopping yet. I mean that’s what this weekend is for, right? Even though I haven’t shopped for anyone else, I surely have a list of “things” that I would love! The following portion of my list expresses the more cultured, artistic side of me (or at least who I’d be if I could afford it). Here goes and remember this is simply a “WISH” list.

kenya.jpg 1. A trip to Kenya. Hey a girl can dream, can’t she.

dvn.jpg 2. The entire Dries Van Noten Spring 08′ collection to wear on my trip. When I’m not doing humanitarian work, of course.

stylist-book.jpg 3. Stylist: The Interpreters of Fashion. I’ve been fighting it for months now and I don’t even like the whole concept but because I feel obligated to have it on my coffee table, I’ll give in.
marni-dress.jpg 4. Marni’s Spring 08′ ode-to-the-solar system dress. C’mon it can’t be any more than, like, $1500.

kenknight-online_1978_412367.gif 5. A ‘vista’ Pina Zangaro screwpost portfolio set in Mist. This is a great modern option for showcasing your best work!

basquiat-book.jpg 6. Jean-Michel Basquiat: 1981, The Studio of the Street. This is a more extensive look at the artist’s work including stuff he did on leather jackets, napkins, and sheet metal.

bib.jpg 7. This awesome “Modern Art” bib from Subversive Jewelry… For the price of a used Volkswagon, $1600.

colures.jpg 8. A subscription to Colures Magazine. They’re not just a mag for “Girls of Colure”. This wee lil UK publication is packed with good fashion, good art, and best of all ANTM’s Jaslene landed a spread in issue 03! You know how much we at Threadtrend heart Jaslene…

Forever 21 Art Deco necklaces take cues from The Great Gatsby

forever-21-art-deco.jpg

On a recent trip to Forever 21, I was actually a little proud of the trendy mass producing retail chain. It seems they’ve taken cues from top designers and created more than a few Art Deco-inspired pieces just in time to feed the up and coming “Art School” trend. Each mixed media piece is unique in it’s own way including wood, rhinestones, metal, and pops of primary color. They remind me of my favorite Marc Jacobs collection to date, Fall 07′, except at these prices you can collect all 20! All are well under $10 bucks!

1. Metal and wood pendent $5.80

2. Metal and rhinestone medallion $6.80

3. Lacquered metal colorblocked pendant $8.80

4. Lucite, metal, and wood pendant $6.80

5. Mirrored metal necklace $8.80

5. Lacquered metal medallion $5.80
